I think every single one of us grew up eating split pea soup. Whether me in Ukraine or you anywhere else. Am I right?!

Regular pea soup takes hours of simmering on a stovetop to really break down the fibers and soften split peas. Not with Instant Pot split pea soup though.

Pressure cooker does all the work for you cooking split peas until tender without hovering over the pot and waiting for hours.

What Are Split Peas?

Split peas are legumes high in protein making split pea soup a complete vegetarian meal. And I belong to strong believers that we should eat less meat.

Split peas also contain a good amount of heart healthy minerals such as magnesium, potassium and calcium. Which may help prevent high blood pressure.

It is recommended that healthy adult consumes about 3 cups of legumes per week on a 2000 calorie diet (source).

Are Split Peas Lentils?

Many people confuse split peas with green lentils. Split peas are not lentils. Both are legumes though.

Split peas are bright green or pale yellow in colour. A shape of a ball split in half in the middle. Hence, the name.

Where as, lentils are pale green-brownish colour and in a shape of a flattened disk with round bumpy middle. This is all in plain English.:)

Do I Have to Soak Split Peas?

Beans, split peas and lentils are all legumes. You do not have to soak split peas or lentils. However, you do have to soak beans before cooking.

Guess what? With Instant Pot recipes, you do not have to soak even beans. You can cook dried beans in minutes. That is why Instant Pot is a magic appliance.

For some reason, my grandma always soaked split peas in Ukraine many years ago. Maybe we had different split peas or she wanted them to cook faster. Not sure. Today, you do not have to soak split peas.

Can I Use Yellow Split Peas?

Absolutely. There is no major difference between green and yellow split peas except their colour.

How to Make Split Pea Soup without Ham Bone

My grandma always made split pea soup with soup bones if she had them. Or vegetarian because money were tight.

Today the situation in North America is the following: ham is highly processed unhealthy food. Adding ham bone defeats the purpose of eating a healthy meal. At least, that’s what I’m after and hope you are too if you are here.:)

Instead, for this Instant Pot split pea soup recipe I use chicken or beef soup bones to create rich broth with deep flavor. If you have time, make Instant Pot bone broth first and use it as a soup base. So much goodness and health benefits!

How to Make Vegan Green Pea Soup

You can make delicious and flavourful vegan split pea soup. Especially in Instant Pot where high pressure extracts the most flavors from ingredients.

I often make vegetarian split pea soup because I do not have soup bones on hand or want to eat less meat and low fat. I like to add smoked paprika or liquid smoke after split pea soup has finished cooking. Amount is to taste. It adds that umami flavor.

How Long Does It Take to Make Split Pea Soup in Instant Pot?

OK, Instant Pot is a magic appliance but I’m not going to lie it is not that instant.

With pressure building up, cooking time and a bit of pressure coming down, split pea soup in Instant Pot takes about 1 hour. Cooking time also depends whether you use 6 quart or 8 quart electric pressure cooker. There is less liquid to heat in a 6 quart pot than in an 8 quart one – so split pea soup cooks faster.

But please keep in mind that you spend 10 minutes to throw everything together and you can walk away and do laundry, homework or just watch TV with a glass of wine. Amazing!

How to Thicken or Thin Out Split Pea Soup

Split pea soup thickens with time.

Right after cooking, soup might look thin to you. In 5-6 hours it will be much thicker. Trust me, I played around with different amounts of dried split peas and liquid.

Next day after being refrigerated, split pea soup will be even more thick. First warm it up on the stove in inner pot or inside the pressure cooker on Saute. It kind of “melts”.

If it is still too thick once reheated, add 1-2 cups water until desired consistency. You might also have to add a bit more salt.

Did you know you can remove inner stainless steel pot, cover with a silicone lid or glass lid and refrigerate? Then reheat next day right on the stove or in Instant Pot?! No need to transfer to a container.

Can I Freeze Pressure Cooker Split Pea Soup?

Yes.

Instant Pot pea soup is perfect for freezing because it contains no starchy pasta or thin flesh vegetables. Once thawed, it tastes as good as fresh.

Freeze in an airtight glass container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight or on a counter during the day. If in a rush, simmer covered on low, stirring occasionally.

Ingredients

6 Quart Instant Pot

  • 12 lbs chicken or beef soup bones
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups (1 lb) dry green/yellow split peas, rinsed & drained
  • 2 cups (2 large) potatoes, cubed
  • 11 cups water, low sodium stock or bone broth
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/3 cup parsley or dill, finely chopped
  • Smoked paprika or liquid smoke, to taste*

8 Quart Instant Pot

  • 12 lbs chicken or beef soup bones
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 large carrots, diced
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups green/yellow split peas, rinsed & drained
  • 3 cups (3 large) potatoes, cubed
  • 14 cups water, low sodium stock or bone broth
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup parsley or dill, finely chopped
  • Smoked paprika or liquid smoke, to taste*

Instructions

  1. In Instant Pot, add soup bones, onion, carrots, garlic, split peas, potatoes, water or stock, bay leaves and pepper. Pot shouldn’t be more than 2/3 full.**
  2. Close the lid, set pressure vent to Sealing and press Pressure Cooking on High for 25 minutes.
  3. After display beeps and says OFF, soup is ready but Instant Pot needs to bring pressure down before you can open it, which will be indicated by a dropped down float valve. You can let it do it on its own which will take about 30 minutes – Natural Release. OR you can do Quick Release by turning pressure valve to Venting position, which takes 3-4 minutes. I recommend doing so outside to avoid the mess and smell.
  4. Open and serve hot. Split pea soup thickens even further within next few hours and even more the next day.

Store: Refrigerate in an airtight container or inner Instant Pot pot with a fitting glass lid for up to 5 days.

Freeze: Fully cook, cool completely and freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw on a stovetop covered on low.

Notes

*If you make vegan split pea soup, add smoked paprika or liquid smoke for that umami flavor. Or just leave it alone.:)

**If your inner pot doesn’t have 2/3 full marking, it is very important to fill the pot only 2/3 full when pressure cooking. Ignore the cups, L and near the edge Max ticks. Your pot always should be not more than 2/3 full when making soup (read more).
